Raphael Bloch-Laine

Senior Lecturer, Department Chair - French Studies & Modern Languages

  • Department: French Studies and Modern Languages

After graduating from Sciences Po (Paris) with a master鈥檚 in political sciences and civil administration, Rapha毛l Bloch Lain茅 pursued advanced studies in linguistics and education, earning a master鈥檚 degree in teaching French as a foreign language. He taught in Thailand and France, including summer graduate courses at the French Petroleum Institute (IFP School), and contributed to the creation of digital resources in scientific French for the oil industry.

He joined The American University of Paris in 2008, where he designed a French course for graduate students. Since then, he has taught across all levels of instruction, and developed several introductory courses that combine linguistic and cultural awareness with interdisciplinary inquiry. Since 2022, he has served as FirstBridge Coordinator, working with task forces and the First Year Council to support student integration and faculty mentoring.

Since 2017, he has contributed to strengthening the department鈥檚 alignment with CEFRL benchmarks and refining its assessment methodology. As Chair of the Department of French Studies and Modern Languages (2021鈥2025), he coordinated the creation and launch of the Global French Studies major and supported the development of a more structured framework for assessing student learning in the core curriculum.

He has also expanded his academic interests to include mathematics and computer science, which he has pursued in parallel with his teaching. His current work explores how emerging technologies can support inclusive and sustainable language learning.

He draws his instructional philosophy from experience as both learner and teacher: learning a foreign language is not only about communication; it鈥檚 about shifting perspectives, expanding intellectual and social capacities, and gaining the confidence to navigate unfamiliar contexts.
